It's finally time to start your Animal Crossing New Horizons adventure. The stay on the island is different enough that a few tips are not too much before starting the game. And whether you are a newcomer, former mayor or former camper. We have therefore prepared this little guide for you to guide you during your first hours of play, while avoiding spoilers.
Summary
Choose your island wisely
If you can modify your island later, it is very important to pay attention to the topography of the place at the start of the game. Indeed, not everything will be accessible from the start, so don't get stuck in a first area that is too small. This area is identified by the Animal Crossing logo on the map when selecting the island.
It is also necessary to take into account the fact that you will have many buildings to place on the island. Especially before you can build bridges and ramps. This is therefore another factor to take into account before making your choice.
If none of the four proposals suits you, know that it is possible to leave the game to redo your character and access other choices.
Clear a location before building
In Animal Crossing New Horizons, you choose building locations yourself. The game does not seek to understand and destroys everything that was in the selected location. So before confirming, remember to recover everything that can be recovered.
These can be nuggets extracted from rocks, fruit and wood from trees (or even moving trees outright) but also picking up weeds which are a useful resource in this episode.
And while you're at it, remember not to put a building too close to a water point so as not to interfere with fishing afterwards.
Craft before selling
Animal Crossing New Horizons continues to pass on the principles of economy in a cute way. And this time, we are interested in raw materials and their transformation to increase their value.
If you want to get rid of something by reselling it, first check that you can't use it in a crafting plan. One thinks in particular of the weeds which are sold for 10 bells each. But combining 15 of them allows you to make a rainleaf that does not sell for 150 but 300 bells.
So before delivering a shipment to Mรฉli & Mรฉlo, take your items out of your pockets and go see what the Possible Manufacturing tab of a workbench offers. You can at least double the value of the items you were already planning to sell.
Save your tools
As in Minecraft, your tools have a limited number of uses. We therefore recommend that you use them only when necessary to limit their breakage and therefore the use of additional resources to replace them.
It would be really frustrating to miss a great opportunity on the way back because of a few too many net shots. For the same reason, remember to replace a tool as soon as possible after it breaks so you don't forget later. We also explain how to make more durable tools.
Keep your hands free
We must be honest, initially changing tools is not the most practical thing in Animal Crossing New Horizons. But do not succumb to the temptation to always keep a tool in hand. They break very quickly and above all it is not uncommon to use them by mistake when you simply wanted to interact with another object or character.
As well remember to press down with the directional cross to store the tool held. This will allow you not to lose a few uses of the tools in a stupid way and above all it will help you with the insects capable of knocking you out. In one time. This is because they only attack you when you are holding a net.
Play at least once a day
Animal Crossing New Horizons offers several small daily events. But in practice, be aware that there are several things that necessarily happen once a day and that we can miss:
- the bottle washed up on one of the beaches
- the four fossils
- the buried bag of 1000 bells
- The rock that gives bells instead of materials
And on top of that, there is of course the daily renewal of stocks in the various stores and the growth of flowers and fruits. But also the connection bonus of the day which is obtained on the Nook Stop terminal of the residents' office.
Play with sound
It is tempting to do without sound when you could listen to or follow something else at the same time. And if the music fully participates in the relaxation aspect of Animal Crossing New Horizons, not completely cutting the volume is a pragmatic idea.
Indeed, it allows you to hear the little noises that indicate nearby creatures. But also the balloons that carry the gifts, the other inhabitants who call you or the timing for fishing.
Go slow and look around
In Animal Crossing New Horizons it is possible to run by holding the B button. Now that you have this information, completely forget the B button. Running will scare away almost all creatures and it would be a shame not to complete its collection or to miss thousands of bells because of it.
Moreover, even at normal speed the rarest insects will flee in front of you. We therefore recommend that you always be careful, especially when passing near flowers or cut trunks. Using tools near insects and fish will also trigger their disappearance.
And for that matter, it may seem silly, but also remember to look around before entering a building. It would be a shame to only see a very rare creature once too late.
Change camera angle
If you don't like the view, you can change the camera angle by tilting your right stick up or down. This will help you see further or higher, but also sometimes hide certain obstacles that obstruct your view.
When tilting the joystick down several times does not make the elements disappear, you can open your inventory with the X button. You cannot move at the same time but you will at least be able to see that there is no nothing to pick up behind that building or that tree.
Check the Nook miles app
Some Nook Miles Missions are shown upfront in your NookPhone. Do not hesitate to consult them to find out what to do but also to claim your miles already obtained. In general, as soon as you see a new function or possibility, test it to see if it unlocks an achievement that is still hidden.
Go regularly along the beaches
Unlike fruits, shells and other corals can appear throughout the day. So even if you've already cleared your beaches this play session, chances are there's already some new stuff to pick up.
And if you have enough to dig, you can also take a look at the small holes in the sand that project water...
When in doubt, consult Tom Nook
Without displaying it clearly, the progress of this Animal Crossing New Horizons depends on a system of missions / quests. But still, there is no quest log to remind you of the current objective. Fortunately, it is possible to go see Tom Nook to ask him the question โWhat should I do? and it will gladly remind you of your current task.
Make the most of it the first day
We promised it in the introduction to this article, we won't spoil you in this guide. So, we won't tell you exactly why you need to make sure to do the following two tasks on the first day, but it will considerably improve your experience the next day.
Pay off your first debt and start the next one
For the location, the tent and the Nook Phone, Tom Nook does not ask you for bells but for miles. And it must be said that Animal Crossing New Horizons is very generous with its miles at the start of the game. But the real interest of such a quick refund is to ask to take the next step.
As soon as you have paid the requested amount, speak again with the tanuki to inform him that you are ready for the rest. This will have an impact on the game the next day but also now.
Entrust five bugs or fish to Tom Nook
Well, if you're used to the series, you already see pretty much what happens when we start giving new creatures. And if so, it goes well in the direction you think, it will also have welcome consequences the next day.
Logically, you are now well prepared for the first hours of Animal Crossing New Horizons and you can also consult our other Animal Crossing guides and tips to go further.
