Among the iconic components of the Animal Crossing series are turnips. Simple vegetable for some, yet it is an element that can bring you big. If for the old players of the series, the concept is already known and undoubtedly well anchored, it can somewhat confuse the new players who discover the series with Animal Crossing New Horizons.
In this guide, we explain what are turnips used for, how to buy them, and especially, when to sell them. This will allow you to earn a maximum of bells with a few little tricks. By the way, know that we have opened a section dedicated to Animal Crossing on our Discord.
Summary
What are turnips used for?
To sum up in a few words, turnips make you a real trader. The principle is simple, you will buy them on a fixed day at a defined price et the objective will be to sell them more expensive for a given period of time. So you have a little less week to resell them.
Every day, it will be possible to resell them on two occasions (in the morning and in the afternoon). The course of the turnip will therefore be totally different. Let's imagine: if you buy 10 turnips at 100 bells and the price of turnips the next day is at 120 bells, you will therefore sell them at a higher price. Purchase price: 10 x 100 = 1000 bells. Resale price 10 x 120 = 1200 bells. So you made a profit of 200 bells! You understood the principle, you speculate.
Get turnips
If you're a gambler, or just want to make some money (much like Tom Nook), turnips are a great way to make a lot of money. It's even without a doubt one of the most lucrative activities in the game. But how does it work?
When to buy turnips in Animal Crossing New Horizons?
Now that you have understood the principle, all you have to do is buy your turnips. But when to buy them? And who to buy the turnips from? In Animal Crossing New Horizons, the purchase of turnips is only done on Sunday morning. You will therefore have to log in before the lunch break to go shopping.
Where to buy turnips?
Every Sunday morning there will be a traveling merchant who will come to your island. Or rather a merchant: it is about Piglet, new character of this Switch episode (and daughter of Porcella for connoisseurs). She wanders all over your island. All you have to do is talk to him and choose the option โI would like to buy someโ. You can also have a summary of the concept by asking him โWhat is the principle? ".
At what price should turnips be purchased?
You should know that it is not only the resale price that varies, there is also the purchase price. The question arises: do we necessarily have to spend everything to take the turnips? Actually, yes, but under certain conditions. Porcelette will tell you the price right away. Usually the purchase price is around 100 bells. We are used to seeing him juggle between 80 and 120 bells per unit.
However, it is possible that it exceeds these prices (or is lower) but these are quite rare cases. If you're playing alone and you're not specifically planning to go to other people's island (we'll talk about that later in this guide), we advise you not to buy one if the price exceeds this range, especially if you don't have the opportunity to play it morning and evening. Of course, if you like risk, go for it. And if you are sure to make a profit, buy as much as possible.
Where to store turnips?
Porcelette sells its turnips in packs of 10. This means that it can very quickly take up space in your inventory. So plan some space by emptying your pockets before talking to him. Then buy your turnips. Once that's done, know that there is absolutely no need to keep them at home or put them somewhere, you can put them anywhere.
Unfortunately, it is not (yet?) possible to store them (store) in a cupboard at home. However, you can place them wherever you want. In your home, on the floor, it doesn't matter! It won't rot (and no one will steal it from you). You can buy some, put them on the ground near your home, then come back to see Porcelette and buy lots more!
Sell โโyour turnips
Now that you have plenty of vegetables at home, you will have to resell them. To do this, all you have to do is go to the famous Nook Shop and talk to the Mรฉli/Mรฉlo duo to make a profit. Know that you will have exactly 12 opportunities to return your turnips : once in the morning, once in the afternoon, from Monday to Saturday.
Enjoy the best turnip course
When to sell turnips? That's a hell of a question. And it's hard to anticipate. To start, you should know that you can check the resale price at any time by talking to Mรฉli/Mรฉlo at the shop. You just have to choose " The course of the turnip? in the options and you will be given the current price.
How is it going for the turnip price? Be aware that this varies much more than the purchase price. It can be around 30 bellsโฆ Just as close to 600 bells! Yes, imagine the gain if you had bought them at a hundred bells. Tom Nook rubs his hands on it.
The trick therefore consists in going to consult every day, in the morning and in the afternoon, the price of the turnip. It's up to you to see if it's interesting. It is rare (but it can happen) that on the 12 occasions present, none is superior. Also, be careful, there are bound to be weeks when the profit is meager. Perhaps you will have a turnip price that is often similar โ or even slightly lower โ when buying!
It's up to you to decide when. Sometimes you have to make concessions. If it's a Thursday night, and you've only had rotten turnip prices, maybe jump at the chance as soon as the price is a little above the purchase price. Don't forget: you will also have to pay attention to the opening hours of the store.
Sell โโyour turnips to someone else
If you are a solo player, this tip will not apply to you. However, be aware that it is very useful to enjoy a trip to another island. Indeed, you can very well sell your turnips to another person. As shown in the image above, a friend can join you and take advantage of the Nook Shop redemption price. Obviously, you will have to limit this to your inventory or make several trips if you have many turnips.
Do not hesitate to consult your relatives to find out what is going on. Better yet, know that we have a special Animal Crossing section on our Discord server that you can join by clicking this link. Several members regularly share their course of the turnip when it is high. You can also very well ask for help if you arrive on Saturday without having sold them.
Be careful, turnips can rot
However, the turnip is not limited to being bought and resold. There are several things to know about them, including the fact that they can rot. They rot for two reasons:
- You didn't sell them until the following Sunday
- You have changed the date or time of your console
In both cases, the turnips rot and cannot be resold. Do not tweak the settings of your console to jump in time. The turnips will be good to throw if you go back in time (go forward in the future on the other hand do not worry). Likewise, if on Saturday night you are not satisfied with the price of turnips and you have no friends to go to, sell them. It will be better than nothing.
My turnips have rotted, what should I do?
However, it should be noted that'a rotten turnip will still have a use (and only one): a special insect appears on it if you have placed one on the ground, outside; an ant. This can allow you to enrich your baby therapy. Obviously, once you've captured it, it's useless. So you can get rid of those rotten turnips.
Miscellaneous tips on turnips
And there you have it, this is where this guide to Animal Crossing New Horizons turnips ends. Finally, there were some things to know about it, weren't there? We summarize some information for you.
- Turnips are vegetables on which one can speculate to make a capital gain on resale
- They can be bought at a variable price on Sunday morning (and only on Sunday morning) at Porcelette, an itinerant merchant
- You can store them by dropping them on the ground (or at home)
- They are sold at the Nook Shop and yield according to the price of the turnip
- The turnip price changes every morning and every afternoon, Monday to Saturday
- The course of the turnip rarely exceeds 200 bells. It can reach 600 bells but these are very rare cases
- Using time travel (changing the time on your console) rots your turnips (if you go back to the past)
- Turnips rot if you don't resell them before Sunday morning
- You can resell them on a friend's island to take advantage of their turnip course (or join us on Discord)
- Putting them on your island (outside) can prevent you from getting the 5 stars to your island's reputation since they are considered to be things lying around. Put them in your home while you resell them (example, upstairs or basement)
If you want other tips on the game, we advise you to go to our complete Animal Crossing New Horizons guide. For example, we talk about the different buildings and shops or all the different tools and crafting plans that exist.
